Yango partners Flutterwave to expand card payments as Zambia’s digital commerce grows

Yango Group’s ride-hailing and food delivery service, Yango, has partnered with African payments company Flutterwave to expand card-based payments for users in Zambia, as the country sees rising adoption of digital commerce and cashless transactions.

Under the partnership, customers booking rides or ordering meals on Yango can pay using bank cards processed through Flutterwave’s payment infrastructure. The integration is designed to improve transaction reliability and security, particularly as more platforms in Zambia shift away from cash-heavy operations.

Zambia’s digital payments market has grown steadily over the past few years, driven by increased smartphone penetration, wider card issuance by local banks, and government-backed financial inclusion efforts.

While cash remains dominant for everyday transactions, card and mobile payments are increasingly used for online services such as food delivery, e-commerce, and ride-hailing, where reliability and speed are critical.

For on-demand platforms like Yango, payment infrastructure has become a competitive differentiator. Failed or delayed transactions can directly affect order completion rates, driver earnings, and merchant trust.

By integrating Flutterwave’s card-processing capabilities, Yango reduces its reliance on fragmented local payment systems and positions itself to scale more efficiently as transaction volumes grow.

Kabanda Chewe, Yango’s country head in Zambia, said the partnership aligns with the company’s focus on improving convenience and accessibility for customers and restaurant partners, particularly as more users transition to digital payments.

Flutterwave’s Zambia country head, Iyembi Nkanza, said the collaboration reflects the company’s broader strategy of embedding its payments infrastructure into everyday consumer platforms across Africa, reducing friction in routine transactions and supporting financial inclusion.

Beyond payments, Yango has been expanding its presence in Zambia through technology-driven services and partnerships with local businesses.

The company said the Flutterwave integration forms part of a broader effort to build a connected service ecosystem that supports customers, restaurants, and delivery partners as Zambia’s digital economy matures.
